Start Smaller

We’re nearly halfway through the year. Can you believe it? Like most years, this one is flying by.

When you hear that, do you think: “OMG, it’s June and I haven’t done anything on my goals list!” Or are you the person who says: “There’s still half the year left—and I’ve already done so much!”

If you’re like most high-achieving women I know, you probably lean toward the first one.

We tend to make long, ambitious lists of everything we want to do. And then we run out of time—or energy—to actually take action.

So, what’s stopping you? Are your goals too overwhelming? Too vague? Too big?

After years of training clients, building a business, starting a family, and trying to stay connected socially, I’ve learned one lesson that’s stuck with me:

Take the smallest step.

Seriously. Step back and shrink the goal. What would a smaller version of your goal look like?

  • Instead of “Read 20 books” → Start one book you’ve been excited about

  • Instead of “Lose 20 pounds” → Make an appointment with a personal trainer

  • Instead of “Spend more time with friends” → Call a friend on your way home from work

We put so much pressure on ourselves to do it all. But we don’t need to do it all. We just need to start small—and stay consistent.

That’s what leads to long-term results. No quick fixes here. Just real, sustainable progress.

It’s simple. But it’s not easy. It’s boring. It requires discipline—not motivation—to keep showing up. (I’ve got thoughts on that too, but that’s for another day!)

So, what’s one small step you can take today?
